Course Structure: B.A with History (UG Yearly Programme w.e.f 2018)

History is the study of the past as it is described in written a document which in turn helps in shaping the future by learning from it. History spans all cultures, eras, seasons and environments and is an immovable factor that can be called upon for knowledge and insight into how the world got to the point it’s now at and how it will continue to develop in future.

Program Objectives :

History aims at helping students to understand the present existing social, political, religious and economic conditions of the people of the globe. The present is in fact the child of the past. It is a development of the past. Some other major points are:-

• To acquaint students with the past and present of India and the World.
• Impart a critical understanding of Indian society, economy, polity, and culture through a historical perspective.
• To prepare students for a range of careers.
• To stimulate intellectual curiosity and research attitude in the students.
• To have some knowledge and understanding of historical development in the wider world.
• To help children understand society and their place within it, so that they develop a sense of their cultural heritage.
• To develop in children the skills of enquiry, investigation, analysis, evaluation and presentation.

Subject Specific Outcomes :

We have some very important as well as interesting Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) for B.A.II & III year students like Historical Tourism, Understanding Heritage, An introduction to Archaeology, Crafts, and Artisans: Living Traditions, Museums and Archives, Indian History and Culture, Indian Art etc.
From all mentioned courses students will recognize the importance of historical places of India and describe the importance of the travel and tourism industry. Students will learn the different facets of Heritage and their significance. They will understand about the legal and institutional frameworks for historic/heritage protection in India as the challenges facing it. They will gather knowledge of about the all historical places/ Heritage through project and visit to Historical sites, Museum and Archives.
Students will learn how to maintain documentary, visual and material remains of the past either in house or institutions. They can understand towards the important and significance of the Museum and Archives to build the history of India. Thus educational tour to the National Archives and National Museum is an integral part of the history students.
In Archaeology section, students will gather information how to write historiography and research methodology in history. They will learn how to identify archaeological sites and explorations of ancient history. They will also learn about the documentation, codification, classification, analyses of findings through field work.
Students will gather knowledge about the Indian Art from ancient to contemporary times, in order to understand and appreciate its diversity and its aesthetic richness. As well as student of history will equip with the abilities to understand Art as a medium of cultural expression.
By reading Indian History & Culture, student will learn about the environment, culture, tradition, practices of Indian people since from the ages. They will acquire knowledge towards the urbanization and changing socio-cultural scenario of India. As well as they can gather knowledge about the cultural heritage, cultural forms and cultural expressions performing arts, fairs and festivals.

Program Specific Outcomes :

Being a subject of social science, history has own value in society and human life. It helps the students to develop their ethnical and social values. They could gather knowledge about the heritage and tradition of their own country and the others. There is a huge potentiality in future of a history student. Various options are opened to history students to choose their career. First of all, history is a subject from primary education level to higher study, so they can engage themselves in teaching profession in primary, secondary, post secondary education up to university level. It is also helpful for those who are dreaming and preparing for UPSSC and SSC. A history student may choose his or her career in journalism or any other editorial board. They may get job in museum, archives and libraries too. Besides those, in the field of research and archaeology they may proceed.

B.A. 1 YEAR (CORE COURSE – I: DSC 1A & 2A ) ( COURSE CODE – 2: DSC 1B & 2B ) History of India from earliest time to 300CE, History of India from c.300 to 1206 CE.
Students of history will acquire knowledge regarding the primitive life and cultural status of the people of ancient India and about the society, culture, religion and political history as well. They will learn about the origin of the Indian empires and dynasties like Gupta, trade and urbanization of ancient civilization like Harrappan civilization, Vedic and later Vedic civilization etc. how to develop Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic cultures in pre-Harrappan period. They will gather the knowledge how to rise of Jainism and Buddhism religion and culture in ancient India. They will learn how to rise and growth of the Gupta’s empire in ancient India. They will realize about the religion and massages from great Ashoka , the great Mauryan Emperor from this paper.
They can achieve knowledge how to develop Indian feudalism and evolution of the political structure of early-medieval north and south India. They can learn how the conquering of Islam had initiated in India and transformed of Indian culture, society, religion and agrarian structure under the Islam power of medieval India. They will gather the knowledge how the Sultanate of Delhi had established in 1206.

B.A. II YEAR (CORE COURSE- 3: DSC1C & 2C) (CORE COURSE- DSC1D & 2D) History of India from c. 1206 to 1707 AD, History of India from 1707 to 1950 AD.
History of Delhi Sultanate is thoroughly described in this portion. They will learn towards the emergence of provincial dynasties & consolidation of regional identities like Bahamanis, Vijaynagara etc.
They will acquire knowledge towards the Turkey’s invasion and struggle for empire and foundation of the Mughal Rule in India. They will learn about how the regional powers had been raised in different parts of India after the downfall of Mughal empire which resulted to raise provincial kingdoms in Bengal, Hydrabad, Mysore, Maratha in western India.
Students will explain how the Company’s Rule in India was established after the battle of Plessey and Legitimized the regulating Act, Socio-religious reform Movements, Judiciary and Educational Reforms. They will know about the land revenue systems under the company’s rule in India. They can explain Indian Nationalism and the freedom struggle and how India got its much awaited Independence. To understand modern India, this part is very essential. Students from history stream will get knowledge about the penetration, expansion and consolidation of British Rule in India. Indian awakening, cultural changes and socio- religious reforms movements, Revolt of 1857 are described in this paper. They will acquire knowledge about communal politics, partition in India and aftermath of Indian states and also how India became the republic nation.

B.A. III YEAR (DSC 1A &2A ) (DSC ) Modern and Contemporary World History-I : 1871-1919, Modern and Contemporary World History-II: 1919-1992
In this portion students will learn the struggle for making of new nations like Italy and Germany. Vienna congress, Fascism, Nazism, 1917 Russian Revolution and the origin of 2 world wars, all these important issues are incorporated in this portion. Students will gather the knowledge of impact of 2nd world war on International system like Cold war, emergence of Third World, non- alignment, system of military and economic alliances, decline of European Imperialism, decolonization has been explained in these papers. Formation of League of Nation, UNO aftermath of world wars which affected to the world politics. Ultimately, the world divided in to two super powers i.e. USSR and associated countries and on other hand USA and their associate powers.
They will also learn about the nationalism and communism in China. Canton commercial system, opium war, opens door policy, Sino-Japanese war, Russo- Japanese war, Manchurian crises etc.

COURSE OUTCOMES FOR HISTORY STUDENTS:-

After completion of this course it helps to grow ethical values among history students. They gathered knowledge about the socio-cultural heritage of India and world as well. This course helps to grow intellectual values among history students and to develop liberal values among them. As a branch of social science, this course helps to develop social values among history students. Above all, it helps to grow national and international understanding among history students.
